Diversity is valuable for many reasons.
As the UK and world becomes more understanding of the different peoples, attitudes, sense of self, sexualities, social background and experiences that it is only natural that we need stories to reflect these. Everything from Derry Girls to I May Destroy You and Bridgerton are highlighting different stories that have traditionally not been seen on screen.
In response regulators and funders want to see this reflected in stories shown on screen. The BFI has its own diversity standards for films it funds and Ofcom monitors broadcast TV and radio diversity.
Now more than ever it makes sense for production companies to be mindful of diversity when producing works.
How script reading can promote diversity
Reading and analysing scripts is a traditional entry route to working the TV and film industry. Read lots of scripts.
“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”
Stephen King
However in order to get a job as a script reader you must be able to show experience.
By making it easier to read scripts and show experience of rating them, coupled with us actively encouraging those from diverse backgrounds to apply, we can help remove barriers to entry in the industry. This in turn will help more diverse voices be heard and seen on British and international screens, stages and radio waves.
What are the plans beyond script reading?
We have a novel, modern approach to script reading. We have also developed novel, modern approach to screen writing.
We will update this page when we have more information to release.
